SIBO.
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is one of the most common reasons for stubborn gut symptoms. Naturopathic care offers several treatment options.
Understanding SIBO.
SIBO is bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine where there should be relatively few bacteria. It produces gas, bloating, and the cluster of symptoms typically labeled IBS.
SIBO has root causes that need addressing alongside treatment: low motility, low stomach acid, post-infectious patterns, medications, or anatomical factors. Otherwise it tends to recur.
How patients describe it.
- Bloating within 30-90 minutes of eating
- Distension that visibly changes the abdomen
- Excessive gas, often with specific odor patterns
- Constipation, diarrhea, or alternating
- Reflux or burping
- Brain fog and fatigue alongside gut symptoms
SIBO is rarely the whole story. Treating the overgrowth matters, but understanding why it developed is just as important. Dr. Abbie Siudzinski, ND
How we work through it.
SIBO breath testing first to confirm and identify the bacterial type (methane, hydrogen, or hydrogen sulfide).
Treatment is targeted to the type and severity. Often a combination of antimicrobial protocols, dietary adjustment, and prokinetic support to prevent recurrence.
We work on root causes alongside treatment to lower the chance it returns. This is the piece most protocols skip.
Tests we typically use here.
The specific panels depend on your situation. These are the most common ones for SIBO.
Testing is ordered only after your 90-minute first visit, and only when it will change your plan.
